Hmmmm that could help, but working from the outside in might help you get edges separated and more clearly defined. All that white on the page can throw off your perception. Because when your drop shades onto the character your eye will be drawn back to the empty white space and makes it really hard to get the balance back.

I guess it easier to relate forms when you have more negative and positives shapes to play with.
